Figure 7.3 (taken from the right-side NLE monitor) is Fit to Be Tide's timeline. All NLE systems use timelines to structure the editing. Figure 7.4 shows a detail from near the top of this timeline.

In the detail, each shot is signified by a pink rectangle, with a label such as "Monster sings" and "Big Al walk by." The arrows in the "fx" track signify special effects (e.g., a dissolve) between one shot and the next.

"A1" is an audio track, with a line indicating the volume of the sound. "pan LR" indicates whether the sound will come from the left or right speaker.
