Gary the Foreign Exchange Teacher.

Susan and I packed our bags and off we went to Austria the first time in 1997 so that I could teach at the university in Klagenfurt. I taught a class in negative political advertising. A concept that was new to the Austrians--but won't be much longer.

The friendly folks at the Institut fur Unterrichtstechnologie und Medienpadagogik were having a party and invited Susan and me to attend. The fellow standing is Dr. Walter Schludermann. He was the other half of the exchange and came with his son and wife to the University of Alabama later that summer to teach.

Here are Dr. Walter and Elfie Schludermann visiting in the U.S. on their first exchange trip to the University of Alabama. We're at the University Club for our last drinks before they leave on a road trip around ther U.S. and then back home to Austria.

Here are Walter and Elfie Schludermann at home in Krumpendorf where they have generously, graciously and foolishly allowed me to stay on my second trip to teach at Klagenfurt.  The amazing thing is these guys never look any older.  More amazing--they invited me to stay with them again in 2003.

Gary's Class

The second time I taught I got to teach something I really knew--English language communication literature.  This is the group of  great students who took the class from me.  The question is which of these students is a former Olympic skier?
