Gary Goes Biking. |
I started riding my son's bike to school in the summer of 1998 and then bought my own bike (he wanted his back). I decided that just tooling around Tuscaloosa wasn't enough so I booked a tour of Canyonlands National Park's White Rim. Never having done any mountain biking (except riding a mountain bike) it was an experience. This is a picture of me after it was all over back at the top. If you look carefully in the background in the center of the picture you can see a white line at the bottom. That's the trail we were taking. You can't see the switchbacks necessary to get back to the top.
Gary's Fellow Travelers. |

These are the people that made the tour with me. They were very supportive of the old guy who was usually at the back of the pack. Left to right from the front are Mag, Viva, Mark (our guide), Ashley (guide and owner of Western Spirit Cycling), in the back Michael, Bev and me. This was taken after we finished on the last day (Day 4). Why am I the only one that looks tired?

Gary Takes a Dip. |
These are the troops after having taken a brisk (OK so it was *&^%# cold) dip in the Green River at the bottom of Canyonlands park at the end of day 1. It was a chance to get some of the grunge off but we didn't stay long in the water. (Left to right Viva, Mag, me, Mark, Michael and Bev) I had more grunge than the rest having fallen off my bike a few times.

Day two was climbing up from the bottom along the Green River to our second night campsite. This is me before we left for day three's ride. The day I broke my bicycle, it rained constantly, and got so cold we were having to deal with the real prospect of hypothermia. Not the most fun day of the trip.
If you'd like to see the route on a topographic map click here but be warned that it is about 125K in size. You'll need to use your back button to return here.
By the way, I'd like to thank the UA Cycling club. They helped me get outfitted for this trip including letting me have one of their jersey's that you see me wearing.
