TCF MAJORS:

The TCF department is growing, and it’s getting harder for us to offer enough seats in the classes TCF majors need. One issue we are now having is that we have many non-majors who are interested in taking our classes as electives or for fun, which means our majors lose out on seats and may be delayed in graduating.

As a result, we are going to be more proactive in making sure our majors get the classes they need by keeping out the students that don’t need them. We may be reviewing course lists soon to see who is registered for our “high demand” classes and to verify that they are one of our majors AND that they are taking coursework intended for their concentration. In addition, we will be placing restrictions on many of our courses for Spring 2013 registration that will prevent non-majors from registering.

If you are not a DECLARED TCF MAJOR and/or you have not DECLARED YOUR CONCENTRATION you may not be able to stay in the classes you have registered for in the Fall. If you have not declared your major and sequence by registration for Spring 2013 you WILL NOT be able to register for many TCF classes offered in Spring 2013.

PLEASE DECLARE YOUR MAJOR AND SEQUENCE RIGHT NOW. This will ensure that you can continue to take the classes you need to graduate on time.

GO CHECK RIGHT NOW. Even if you are positive that you have declared your major, you may be wrong. Log onto myBama, go to your “Student” tab and click on the crimson “DegreeWorks” icon. Check the far right column and make sure that the “Major” field says “Telecommunication and Film” AND make sure that the “Concentration” field says the correct concentration. If you aren’t sure what your concentration should be, read the bottom of this e-mail.

If everything is correct, then you are good to go. If not, go to the next step.

DECLARE YOUR MAJOR AND CONCENTRATION! Here’s how:

Log onto myBama

Click on the “Student” tab

Find the links that say “Change of major/minor”

Click on the top link and watch the instructional video

Click on the bottom link and fill out the correct information (NOTE: If you are declaring TCF as a second major, you will need to contact Dr. Alsip at mkalsip@ua.edu for assistance)

Click through until you get a green confirmation banner at the top of the screen

After 24 hours, go check DegreeWorks and MAKE SURE that your information is now correct. If so, you’re all set!

Please do this RIGHT NOW. If you are unable to take a class because your major or sequence is not declared correctly we won’t be able to give you a special permit to take the class and you will have to wait until it is offered again. You don’t want this to happen and neither do we, so make sure it doesn’t by DECLARING YOUR MAJOR AND CONCENTRATION.

CONCENTRATIONS:

Critical Studies (History and criticism of television and film)

Documentary (Production skills for documentaries)

Electronic News (Sports, Entertainment, and Newsroom Broadcast Journalism)

Media Production (Production skills for television and film)

Media Management (Management for news stations)

Production Management (Management for television and film productions)

If you still aren’t sure about your concentration, contact the TCF advisor, Dr. Alsip, through the TCF Office (room 484 Phifer, 348-6350).

In April 2011, Alabama and Missouri were devastated by the worst tornado outbreak in 40 years. In the span of a few hours, entire neighborhoods were destroyed and hundreds of lives lost. Thousands were left homeless. Radio and television broadcasters were instrumental in saving lives with tornado warnings and emergency and disaster relief information. They also played a critical role in the recovery and rebuilding of communities in the aftermath of the storms.

These feats of courage, dedication and generosity demonstrated by local broadcasters are captured in this short film produced by talented media arts professor, Scott Hodgson, and his students at the University of Oklahoma, along with Chandra Clark, professor of telecommunication and film at The University of Alabama. Working with the Broadcast Education Association, Scott and Chandra compiled stunning footage for a video account of broadcasters’ response to these horrific tornadoes.

Exciting news from Professor Andy Grace: his film, Eating Alabama, has just been completed.

Here’s the announcement from the Eating Alabama Website:

This all started about four years ago, when I talked my wife Rashmi into doing something a little ridiculous. We had recently moved back to Alabama after graduate school out West, and, like a lot of people, we were starting to think more critically about the food we eat – where it’s grown, how it gets to us, who grows it. Both Rashmi and I have farmers in our family history, but a few generations back there was this clean break with the land. I understood on a kind of historical/economic/sociological level how that break from the land happened, but I’d never thought much about what it meant to those of us that came afterwards. And so that was the genesis of this idea – what would it be like to try and go back?

Short of selling the house, quitting our jobs, and starting a farm, the only way we knew how to go back to a local food economy was to completely change our diets. We decided to eat only food grown or raised within the state of Alabama. Some friends joined us too, and we started a blog (which you’ll find archived on this site). And I started filming.

I had a kind of naive assumption about this movie – that we would do our little eating project, that we find some connection to all the farmers I assumed were out there, and that everything would wrap itself up in a nice and tidy package. But that’s not usually how documentaries happen, and this one was no different. The film I ended up making doesn’t look much like the one I envisioned – but that’s partly why we’re in this in the first place, right? To try and understand something better?

Anyway, the film is finished. And now we’re proud to show it off. Stay tuned to the website, follow us onFacebook and Twitter, and please sign up for the email list to be alerted about future screenings. We’ll be announcing more screening dates in the very near future.

And if you’ve followed the blog from the very beginning – thanks. Your readership and your comments throughout the years have been wonderful. Thanks to all of you for your support.

-Andy
