Josh Werner - Original Score
Originally from Milwaukee Josh Werner now lives and works in New York City.
He began his music career by studying the upright bass with his mentor,
bass virtuoso Richard Davis, and at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music,
where he received a scholarship. While still in Milwaukee Josh worked with
Peter Buffet (Dances with Wolves), Citizen King, as well as Midwest jazz
legends such as Mante Ellis and Berkeley Fudge. In 1997 Josh received a
composition and performance scholarship to Mannes Jazz and Contemporary
Music Program at the New School University in New York, where he earned
his Bachelor of Arts in 2001.
Werner possesses an unmistakable musical versitility as evidenced by his
membership in a variety of bands: the Cajun soul of Louque (Lava/Atlantic
Records), the Capeverdean Dub band Zionix, the 70’s break beat band
Butta (Fruitmeat Records), Nigerian afro funk diva Wunmi, and the Hasidic
reggae band Mattisyahoo (Jdub Records). He also performs with jazz artists
John Medeski, Cecil Bridgewater, and Etienne Sadjwick. Werner has recorded
with Dr Israel, Erykah Badu, Eric Krasno of Soulive, Bilal, Horace Andy,
Mark Rae and Groove Collective.
In 1999 he scored a documentary for the Public Broadcasting System’s
nationally televised P.O.V. series entitled Take IT From ME. Other production
credits include Niko Sol (Grand Central), Pauley Ethnic (Burnin’ Syndicate),
and Louque (Lava/ Atlantic Records). Josh has scored several Greer films,
including the award winning Not Color Blind, Just Near-Sighted.
